Area with the ‘Most Urgent Need’
This area is dependent on ongoing funding. It gives the RHW Foundation the opportunity to help the hospital by purchasing vital medical equipment at very short notice. This equipment could be life-saving for the patient.
Research Fund
The Royal Hospital for Women is the only specialist women’s hospital in New South Wales and is recognised internationally for its research into gynaecological cancers, paediatric & adolescent gynaecology and diseases that affect very premature babies. The generous help from the community ensures this knowledge continues to develop and is imparted to like-minded researches around the world.
Equipment Fund
The Foundation works with Individuals, Associations, Businesses and Corporations in forming a partnership that benefits many women and babies through the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. Below is a list of equipment that is currently on the ‘waiting’ list.

Ultrasound Machine
The RHW Breast Centre provides high risk breast clinics which often involve much younger women. Ultrasound, as a screening tool, particularly for these women is becoming more important. This ultrasound machine would provide a second machine to allow the Breast Centre to continue its patient breast screening regime, whilst the radiologists can perform breast procedures at the same time. This would facilitate timely and increased access for women requiring breast assessment and enhance the Breast MRI screening of mutation positive women.

Radiometer
Fetal blood sampling is the accepted ‘gold standard’ for assessing the fetus during labour. Such a test informs the clinician of the small number of babies that are becoming compromised in labour and require an emergency caesarean birth. If the test is normal, this can assist in preventing caesarean sections.

Neonatal Resuscitaire
The neonatal resuscitaire is an essential machine used for the resuscitation of newborn babies. This machine would be utilised within the RHW Theatre Department for babies born by Caesarean Section. Currently there is only one resuscitaire located in the Operating Theatres. This additional machine would provide immediate access where a second resuscitaire is required in cases of multiple births (twins/triplets) and commonly where more than one Caesarean Section is being performed at a time. This would reduce the need to share and transfer neonatal resuscitaires from other clinical areas when needed by Theatres. |

Acute Care Bi PAP Machine
The Bi Pap machine is used not only in Acute Care but at times in ‘Recovery’ for critically ill patients. This equipment provides increased levels of oxygen for acutely ill gynaecology patients and un-well obstetric patients. It provides a great degree of comfort, safety and superior operation than the current machine that is at present on loan.

Digital Video Colposcope
The colposcope is an essential device utilised by the Gynaecology Outpatient Department as part of a gynaecological assessment for women with identified abnormalities. This portable device would provide improved viewing and anatomy detail with the advantage of recording high definition images that can be recorded and stored. This device would provide an additional colposcope for clinic use and could also be shared by the Gynaecological Oncology Department. |

Gynaecology Examination Couch
This wider examination couch is designed to accommodate larger patients and would provide improved patient comfort and assist positioning and support for women attending the Gynaecology Outpatient Department for gynaecology examinations and procedures. In particular, this examination couch would be of great benefit for women with reduced mobility and spinal injuries. The Gynaecology Outpatients Department is currently working towards improving access to women with these particular health issues and this equipment would be used for both outpatients and also for other patients within the hospital.

Birth Obstetric Trainer
A core responsibility of the RHW is related to the training and support of medical and midwife students, junior medical staff and midwives, as well as Registrars in training. In order to provide scenarios that are true to life as possible, it is highly desirable to have quality educational tools. To this end, our Birthing Services are in need of a full birth obstetric training unit / model for teaching instrumental delivery techniques as well as the management of breech births.
