Equipment
Required p.a.

OR1 - Operating Room 1(Dept Endo-Gynaecology)
Imaging and surgical data obtained at the time of surgery are currently captured on videotape and similar media. The system needs upgrading to a fully digitised operating room allowing every single piece of information to be stored for future reference. Images obtained during surgery can be easily stored and more importantly retrieved at any time. All images are transformed into a signal, which can easily be sent anywhere within the hospital or halfway across the world. The OR1 is state-of-the-art technology, and Assoc Prof Vancaillie, Director Endo-Gynaecology, would be pleased to meet with interested parties and discuss indepth the advantages of installing a digital operating room.

Mid Range Ultrasound Machine (Dept Maternal Fetal Medicine) - Sponsored by RHW
The Royal has a well established Dept of Fetal Medicine with subspecialty expertise in the diagnosis and the management of congenital fetal abnormalities. But currently it depends on the Dept of Medical Imaging to carry out the necessary ultrasounds. The purchase of a mid-range ultrasound machine specifically for the Maternal Fetal Department would enable the professional staff to further their research and education that would enhance the life expectancy of the tiny unborn baby.

High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilator (HVOF)
Some newborn infants have lungs that are so sick, normal ventilators are unable to provide enough oxygen for them. The HVOF is a special ventilator that has the capacity to deliver more than 1000 breaths per minute. These breaths very softly move air in and out of the baby's lungs in such a gentle fashion that very sick lungs have a chance to heal.

Incubators ( x 10)(Newborn Care Centre)
The Dept of Newborn Care at the RHW specialised in looking after premature infants. These particular babies need to be protected against external elements like noise and cold. Incubators are see-through perspex cribs that can be heated and humidified so these little babies can be nursed in environments that are warm and moist enough so the babies can save their strength and grow. Incubators are also very good insulators against outside noise, allowing the baby to sleep and rest better than if they were exposed to the chaotic ambient noise of a busy nursery.
$20,000 each

Syringe Drivers (x15)Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit looks after very, very small babies, some of whom only weigh 500gms at birth. These little babies are unable to drink any milk. The amount that is fed into one of these very small baby's veins needs to be precisely controlled: too much or too little of any one solution can make the baby very sick.Syringe drivers are machines that control the amount of fluid pumped into a baby's veins; as little as 0.1 ml (or tenth of a drop) of fluid per hour. This precision is vital for our babies. A difference of 0.1ml per hour in a 500gm baby, for example, may equate to a 10ml difference in a full-sized adult.
$12,500 each

Baths - Delivery Suite(x 2)
The use of water in labour and birth is a well recognised and highly effective means of pain relief during labour and birth. Currently the Delivery Suite does have a number of baths that are suitable only for pain relief due to their limited size, as the water is not very deep and does not permit the woman to move easily within the bath to change positions. The installation of more suitable sized baths will provide women with more satisfactory pain relief and provide options for women during their labour and birth.

$10,000 each

Billibed (x 2)(Post Natal Department)
Billibeds are used for babies in the first week of life if they are jaundice and need to be treated. With the Billibed the baby is zipped into a baby suite that is positioned under fluorescent lights. The baby feels secure and warm, and is not so distressed. Therefore the treatment works better and faster.

Blood/Fluid Warmers x 2Anaesthetic Department
The purpose of using a blood/fluid warmer is to help ensure that patients do not become hypothermic during their surgical procedure. The effects of hypothermia in the perioperative period include increase risk of infection, increased bleeding and an increase in adverse cardiac morbidity. The purchase of this equipment will potentially improve the overall care of patients at the Royal.

Epidural Infusion Pumps(x 6)
Gemstar Infusion Pumps are designed for the administration of an epidural infusion for women in labour. Using such a pump is a much safer option for patient care, as it is a designated pump with an internationally coded administration set. It is also a more effective way of administering an epidural infusion, as the woman receives a continuous low dose of epidural drugs that can be titrated to her individual needs.
$2,900 each

Delivery Room Cupboards (x 52 doors)
A feature of the Delivery Suite has been to create a comfortable and pleasant environment for the woman and her family with all medical equipment located behind cupboards. This allows the equipment to be out of sight, yet available immediately if required. The bi-fold doors on the cupboards have required extensive maintenance and require replacement with a door of less weight to ensure that they remain effective and safe for staff to use.
$750 each door
